First, I want to be very clear that I cannot take credit for this week’s article idea as it is an initiative by ISAC (The Iowa State Association of Counties) to bring awareness to the public about what Counties DO and how they support the residents. While it wasn’t my idea, it is one that I feel very strongly and passionate about, which is why I decided to share it with you all.
We all rely on Franklin County every single day, whether you realize it or not. From road maintenance to uniformed patrol, counties keep Iowa safe. The services you rely on every day don’t just happen. They are built, maintained, and delivered by counties across Iowa. From the roads you drive to the services you rely on; counties are behind more of your daily life than most people realize.
Counties maintain roads, coordinate emergency response, and safeguard elections and public funds. Counties maintain nearly 90,000 miles of roads and over 18,000 bridges across Iowa. In fact, 78% of Iowa’s roadways are county owned and maintained. That’s how communities stay connected.
In many communities, county government is public safety. Sheriff’s departments provide law enforcement, especially in areas without local police departments. In addition, your vote is local. Counties administer every election, from president to school board, making sure the process is secure, accurate, and accessible.
When something goes wrong, counties help make sure the right people show up fast. They coordinate 911 systems and support EMS and emergency response across the state. Counties lead planning, response, and recovery when disaster hits, so communities can get back on their feet. Preparedness does not happen by accident. It is planned by Counties.
Some of the best places to unplug are made possible by Franklin County Conservation. Parks, trails, and wildlife areas are protected and maintained for everyone to enjoy. Life’s biggest moments are recorded and protected at the county level. From birth certificates to property records, counties keep what matters accessible and secure.
Your property taxes don’t stay in one place. Counties collect them and distribute funds to local taxing jurisdictions like public schools, cities, community colleges, and more, helping keep communities running. Strong communities like ours don’t just happen. Counties guide development, support local businesses, and help create opportunities that keep Iowa growing.
While everyone thinks of Sheriff’s deputies, secondary roads, and paying your property taxes, there is so much more that runs behind the scenes to keep communities running smooth and strong. Until next time….
