Admiral Mike Franken stopped by Hampton on Sunday, August 14 as he continues his campaign across Iowa to unseat incumbent Senator Charles Grassley in the upcoming senatorial election.
Franken is a native of northwest Iowa who joined the Navy in 1978 and served until 2017, reaching the rank of Vice Admiral and spending his last years in service as the director of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

The Hampton City Council discussed soccer, the library, and water rates during their regular meeting on Thursday, June 11.
At the meeting the council recognized Reggie and Wanda Stoppelmoor as August's Image of Pride Award winner.
The Stoppelmoors were nominated by council member Bill Hodge, who was unaware that they had previously won seven years prior.

The Franklin County Board of Supervisors continued their work on the county's developing wind farm ordinance during their regular meeting on Monday, August 15.
At the meeting, the supervisors reviewed questions and suggestions from a legal review of the ordinance, getting into the fine details of how the ordinance works as a practical matter.

La Luz Central Cultural helped community kids get ready for the upcoming school year during their Back To School event on Monday, August 8.
"We had a great turnout," said Liliana Velasco.
More than seventy backpacks were handed out to incoming students during the event. Though parents with kids that couldn't make it will have a second chance to get one in the coming weeks.

Senator Joni Ernst visited the West Fork Food Pantry on Saturday, July 16 as a part of her 99 county tour. During her stop, she heard the story of Lisa Rodriguez, a local woman. Lisa told the senator about her grandfather Raymond’s service in World War II and his medals and commendations. Unfortunately, all of these were stolen. Senator Ernst and her office have begun the process of restoring them to the late veteran’s family.

Rick Stewart, the Libertarian Party candidate for Iowa Governor, rolled through Hampton on Tuesday, July 12 for the Franklin County Fair Parade.
As a third-party candidate without the financial resources of his competitors, Stewart has been attending parades across the state as a way of elevating his profile with potential voters. The Franklin County Fair Parade was his 31st parade of the year for him.

The Hampton Country Club hosted the third annual charity golf tournament called “Drives for Dollars” on Saturday, July 9. The tournament drew a crowd of people from across the state, including a busload from Des Moines.
